Latest Media Statement

Welcome to the website of the 4th IUPAP International Conference on Women in Physics (ICWIP 2011). Universal access to science, and participation in science, is a principle that runs through the activities of the international Scientific Union and its member unions, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). IUPAP has recognised a particular need to foster the participation of women in physics. The IUPAP Conference series on Women in Physics, organised by IUPAP Working Group 5, has a history not only of success and growth but of making a difference in the physics community.

The fourth conference in this series, ICWIP 2011, will be held in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. The conference will be hosted by Women in Physics in South Africa (WiPiSA) and the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP). ICWIP 2011 will provide a forum for both scientific presentations and for discussion of issues related to attracting, retaining and improving the status of women in physics.

South Africa achieved democracy in 1994. The government and national institutions have a strong emphasis on Human Capital Development and encourage the study of maths and science in schools, tertiary education, the acquisition of higher degrees and redress of gender imbalances. Much remains to be done. However, the hosting of a major international conference on women in a scientific field is an indispensable step in practical implementation and in strengthening efforts to remove imbalances and obstacles that remain. South Africa has proven that it can make fundamental changes in its society. The physics community in South Africa is actively engaged in changing the world for its members, and for these reasons cordially invites you to attend ICWIP 2011 in Stellenbosch.
